| | Caddis Fly and Fungus Gnat Ref: AI159 A 7mm Caddis Fly (Insecta: Trichoptera) can be seen within this clear honey coloured piece of Baltic Amber. It looks much bigger because of the way the wings are presented. The approximate dimensions of the piece are 23 x 30mm, and it also contains a 3mm fungus gnat (Nematocera: Mycetophilidae) which is the slightly rarer type of fungus gnat found in Baltic Amber. Midges with attached mite Ref: AI157 This piece contains five midges (Nematocera: Chironomidae) with body lengths ranging from approximately 2mm downwards, one of which actually has a parasitic mite (Erythraeidae) attached. There is also another freestanding mite within the piece. Although mites are not particularly uncommon in themselves, flies with attached mites are rare in amber (as is any other evidence of direct parasitism). The Baltic amber piece itself measures approximately 20 x 18mm. It is very difficult to photograph the mite because of the curved edge of the amber, but it is arrowed in the microscope image. | | Male Spider Ref: AI146 A 5mm spider (Arachnida: Araneae) is trapped within this Baltic Amber piece. It measures 15mm including legs. The amber piece itself measures 17 x 16mm. This specimen can be identified as an adult male because of the enlarged drumstick like rounded palps which can be seen clearly. In the female and all immature spiders, the palps are used as sensory and feeding organs. When young male spiders undergo their final maturation moult, the pedipalps become radically modified and are used during mating. Click picture for microscope image.

Harvestman Ref: AI147 A dark piece of Baltic Amber which measures 20 x 17mm and contains a rare harvestman (Arachnida: Opiliones) The harvestman measures 12mm including legs and can be clearly seen against the dark background of the amber which is caused by organic debris in the piece. Harvestmen are members of the class Arachnida, which they share with true spiders (Araneae), mites and ticks (Acari), pseudoscorpions or false scorpions (Pseudoscorpionida), true scorpions (Scorpiones) and sun spiders (Solpugida). They are predators and capture their prey with their chelicerae (mouthparts), pedipalps, and their front pair of walking legs although harvestmen are also known to feed on dead vegetable matter. In contrast to true spiders, Opiliones do not possess poison glands but instead have scent glands that produce a defensive secretion and they also have no silk glands or spinnerets.
